There are many reasons behind making the beautiful and colorful bird peacock the national bird.

In 1960, a meeting was held at Udhagamandalam (now Ootacamund) in the state of Tamil Nadu for the selection of the national bird.

According to the guidelines of the meeting, the bird found in every part of the country was to be chosen as the national bird.

Also common man knows them and they are part of Indian culture.

Keeping all these things in mind, the peacock was chosen.

A few days later, on 26 January 1963, the peacock was declared the national bird.
