Five accused arrested in 1984 riots cases in Kanpur

Kanpur, 23 June (H.S.). The SIT probing the 1984 riots case in Kanpur arrested five accused on Thursday. A case was registered against the arrested accused at Kidwai Nagar police station.

The SIT, which is investigating the atrocities on Sikhs after the assassination of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1984, has intensified the arrest of the accused. Five more accused were arrested on Thursday. The arrested accused include Jaswant resident of Kanjadpurwa Kidwai Nagar, Ramesh Chandra Dixit resident of Juhi Lal Colony, Ravi Shankar Mishra resident of Juhi Lal Colony, Bhola Nirala Nagar and Ganga Baksh Singh resident of U Block Juhi Colony. Some of those arrested today were caught earlier and are now out on bail.

SIT DIG Balendu Bhushan said on Thursday that five accused have been arrested today. All these have been arrested after investigation of the case registered at Kidwai Nagar police station. A total of 11 accused have been arrested so far in the Sikh riots case. 63 accused are yet to be arrested. The operation for his arrest is on.

In 1984, after the assassination of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, 127 Sikhs were killed by an angry mob in Kanpur. Five people were murdered in Nirala Nagar.
