One time best umpire forced to sell shoes in Pakistani market

Asad Rauf is considered one of the best umpires of Pakistan. Asad Rauf has officiated in 49 Tests, 98 ODIs and 23 T20 Internationals in his career spanning 13 years. Now Asad Rauf’s life has changed a lot and he runs a shop in a market in Lahore. Rauf is no longer interested in the game of cricket.

Asad Rauf runs a footwear shop

Asad Rauf told a Pakistani channel, “I have lived my whole life.” I quit cricket completely after 2013, because I had left the job. I have put this little setup. Look, it’s working. Working as long as there is life is in my blood. I am now 66 years old and still standing on my feet. People keep working, if they leave work, they will stay at home.

 

BCCI banned

Asad Rauf was banned by the BCCI for five years in 2016. The disciplinary committee then found him guilty of corruption. Rauf accepted valuable gifts from bookies and his role in the match-fixing scandal during the 2013 IPL also came to light. On the BCCI ban, Rauf said, “I’ve had my best time in the IPL, except the issues that came up later. I have nothing to do with him, he has come from BCCI and he took the decisions.

 

Model was accused of sexual harassment

Rauf was also in the news for sexual harassment allegations leveled by a Mumbai-based model in 2012. The model claimed that she had an affair with a Pakistani umpire as he had promised to marry her. But later Rauf did not keep his promise. Rauf said, ‘When the girl’s case came up, I had gone to the umpire in the IPL a year ago.
