On the seventh day of the Commonwealth Games 2022, India added one gold and one silver medal to their tally. Out of these, Sudhir created new history by winning gold in men’s heavyweight para powerlifting at Commonwealth Championship. Though his historic achievement is currently being praised all over the world, Sudhir’s journey to reach this milestone was not easy.
Born in a farmer’s family in Lath village of Sonepat, Haryana, Sudhir was a genius since childhood. But at the age of five, during Ain Umedi, he got a disease like polio. Due to this Sudhir became handicapped due to foot problem. But he did not give up and started powerlifting in 2013 to keep his body fit. With its constant practice, sports became a part of his life.
Inspired by Para athlete Virendra Dhankhar, Sudhir started Para Powerlifting. In just two years of hard work, he made it to the national level and won a gold medal in the national games to become the captain of the state. Sudhir is a seven-time national gold medalist.
Sudhir has won the title of Strong Man of India in 2021 and 2022. It was from here that the hope of winning a medal at the international level arose in Sudhir’s mind. After this he started preparing for the Commonwealth Games to be held in Birmingham. He was preparing for the gold performance at the Commonwealth Games here in Delhi. While he practiced for five hours every day, Sudhir worked hard to achieve success by lifting 250 kg every day, three hours in the morning and two hours in the evening.
Sudhir always prefers to eat swadeshi for his body fitness and even now he eats chana and almonds along with five liters of milk daily. This makes their body completely natural. He also advises other athletes to prefer natural and indigenous foods and not use steroids. Sudhir is already preparing for the Paris Para Olympics and has also qualified for the Hangzhou Asian Para Games next year.
Sudhir made a one-sided performance in the men’s heavyweight para powerlifting at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and was ahead of the competition from the very beginning. He lifted 208 kg in his first attempt. Then in the second attempt he lifted the weight of 212 kg. Sudhir’s weight is 87. 30 is the same. This makes him 134 in the competition. He got 5 points and with these points he has also created a new record by winning the gold medal for India.
