Indian cricketers, including skipper Rohit Sharma and opener Shubman Gill, practiced nets on Monday ahead of the fifth and final Test against England in Birmingham from July 1. Rohit and Gill are likely to open the innings for India in this Test match and they were both seen lighting up the game during a practice session at the Leicester County ground. Rohit was rested at home in the T20 International series against South Africa. He showed very little play on the front foot while playing a pull shot on the short ball. During the batting session, Gill was seen working on various aspects of his game.

The Indian team will be here for a week and will play a four-day warm-up match against Leicester County from June 24. Rohit and KL Rahul played a key role in India’s 2-1 lead in the Test series in England last year after the final match was canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. However, due to injury, Rahul will not be able to play in the fifth Test being played now. He was also ruled out of the series against South Africa due to injury. Gill is likely to open the innings in his absence.

Rohit scored 368 runs in four Tests with the help of a century and two half-centuries, while Rahul scored 315 runs with the help of a century and a half-century. Gill, who played a key role in India’s historic Test series win on Australian soil in 2020-21, would like to make a mark on the UK tour. During this match, Rohit will be leading the Test team on foreign soil for the first time.

India have to play three T20 Internationals and one more ODI in England. The team will also play two warm-up matches against Derbyshire and Northamptonshire before the limited overs series. Virat Kohli, Cheteshwar Pujara and Ravindra Jadeja will not be part of the squad for the series against South Africa.
