Commonwealth Games: President Murmu and PM Modi congratulate Murali Sreeshankar for winning silver in long jump
New Delhi, 5th August (H.S.). President Draupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday congratulated Murali Sreeshankar, who won a silver medal in the men’s long jump event at the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2022.
India’s Murali Sreeshankar won a silver medal in the men’s long jump final with a mark of 8.08m at the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham on Thursday.
President Murmu tweeted, “Congratulations Sreeshankar for winning silver in the long jump at the Commonwealth Games. Your long jump has won India’s first medal for the event at the Commonwealth Games. This unprecedented achievement will inspire countless Indians, especially the youth.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also congratulated the athlete on his historic silver medal win.
Prime Minister Modi tweeted, “M Sreeshankar’s silver medal in CWG is special. After decades, India has won a medal in the men’s long jump at the Commonwealth Games. His performance bodes well for the future of Indian athletics. Congratulations to them.”
Sreeshankar won a historic silver in the men’s long jump with a distance of 8.08 metres, becoming the first Indian male athlete to win a Commonwealth Games medal in the long jump.
Laquan Nair (8.08m) of the Bahamas won the gold medal, while Jovan van Vuuren (8.06) of South Africa won the bronze medal at Birmingham 2022.
