Commonwealth Games: India’s golden hat-trick in wrestling: Deepak-Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik win gold

India completed a golden hat-trick in a single day at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games as Indian wrestlers put up a stellar performance on the first day. Bajrang Punia, Deepak Punia and Sakshi Malik won gold medals for India in freestyle wrestling. While India’s Anshu Malik won the silver medal after losing in the final. While Bajrang Punia retained the gold medal he won four years ago at the Gold Coast in Birmingham. Bajrang defeated McNally of Canada 9-2 in the final.

India’s Deepak Punia won the gold medal by defeating Mohammad Inam of Pakistan 3-0 in the final of the 86 kg weight category.

Sakshi Malik, who led India to a bronze medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics, also won a gold medal at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games. He defeated Godinez of Canada to win the 62kg weight category. At one point Sakshi was trailing 0-4. However, he came back strongly to level the score at 4-4 and beat his opponent to win the gold medal.

India’s Anshu Malik made it to the finals of the 57kg weight category with a brilliant performance. However, she lost 3-7 to Adekuroy of Nigeria. So he had to be content with silver. Divya Kakra won the bronze medal for India. She made it to the bronze medal match with a remarkable performance in the recuperation event after losing in the quarterfinals of the 68kg weight category. Where they defeated Kukor-Lemali of Tonga 2–0.
