CWG 2022: Murali Sreeshankar gives India its first silver in long jump, medal after 44 years
India’s star athlete Murali Sreeshankar has created history in the Commonwealth Games 2022. Sreeshankar won India a silver medal for the first time in the men’s long jump event. Murali won the silver medal with a jump of 8.08m. Overall, he is the second Indian male athlete to win the Commonwealth Long Jump medal.

India won its first medal in the Commonwealth long jump event 44 years ago. In 1978, Suresh Babu won a bronze medal for the country in the Commonwealth Games held in Canada.
Sreeshankar from Kerala weathered the bitter cold in England. Sreeshankar, who performed brilliantly in the qualifying rounds, faced a severe cold in the final round. He missed the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games due to appendicitis.
India’s second medal in athletics
This is India’s second medal in athletics event at the Commonwealth Games 2022. Earlier Tejaswan Shankar had won a bronze medal in the high jump. Apart from Sreeshankar, Mohammad Anees Yahia also reached the final but finished fifth with a superb jump of 7.97m.
The whole family is involved in the game
23-year-old Sreeshankar has dedicated the medal received to his family and country. According to Murali, his entire family is in the field of sports. Even during meals, games are discussed in their house and games are also watched on TV. During the lockdown, a cousin gave a lot of support and got a separate gym built.
