Australian legendary cricketer Andrew Symonds dies in car accident, mourning in cricket world

New Delhi, 15th May (Hindustan). Australian cricket legend Andrew Symonds has died in a car accident in Queensland. Symonds was 46 years old.

Symonds played 26 Test matches for Australia and scored two centuries. He played 198 One Day Internationals for Australia and won two World Cups.

He died in a fatal road accident in the Hervey Range, about 50 kilometers from Townsville, where Symonds lived, a police statement said.

“Preliminary information indicates that Symonds’ car crashed shortly after 11 p.m. on Hervey Range Road near the Ellis River Bridge,” the statement said. Emergency service doctors tried hard to save Symonds but died of severe injuries.

According to a News Corp report, Symonds’ family issued a statement confirming his passing, and appreciated the sympathy and well wishes of the people, and asked that his privacy be respected.

Symonds played 198 ODIs for Australia and was a key member of the team that went on to win consecutive World Cups in 2003 and 2007 without losing a single match.

It was the 2003 World Cup for which he would be most remembered, when he took to the international stage with a brilliant century against Pakistan. The explosive right-handed batsman also played 26 Tests, scoring centuries against England and India, while he was also a valuable substitute with the ball on his off-breaks or with medium pacers.

Symonds has scored 1462 runs in 26 Test matches at an average of 40.61, with 2 centuries and 10 half-centuries. His highest score is 162 not out. Apart from this, he has also taken 24 wickets.

At the same time, he has scored 5088 runs in 198 ODIs at an average of 39.75, in which his highest score is 156. During this, he has scored 6 centuries and 30 half-centuries. He has also taken 133 wickets in one day.

In T20 cricket, he has played 14 matches for Australia and scored 337 runs at a strike rate of 48.14. He has scored 2 half-centuries in this format, 85 not out being his highest score. He has also taken 8 wickets in T20.
