New Delhi, 5th August (H.S.). Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur has congratulated Para-powerlifter Sudhir on winning the historic gold medal in the ongoing Commonwealth Games on Thursday.

Para-powerlifter Sudhir on Thursday won the gold medal in the men’s heavyweight final at the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2022 with a best weight of 212kg.

Thakur tweeted, “Sudhir starts India’s medal tally (in Para-Powerlifter) by winning gold at CWG 2022. Congratulations on your medal in your first Commonwealth Games. Another athlete from Haryana is leaving his mark on the world stage. With a display of skill and spirit on the mat today, you showed the world what champions are made of.”

Sudhir won India’s first gold medal in para-powerlifting at the Commonwealth Games. He defeated Nigeria’s Ikechukwu Obichuku (133.6 points) by 0.9 points.

Sudhir started his event with a successful attempt of lifting 208 kg and secured 132.0 points. In his second attempt, he successfully lifted 212 kg scoring 134.5 points.

In the third and last attempt, he failed to lift 217 kg, though he still won the gold medal with a score of 134.5.
