ATK Mohun Bagan signs up with Ashish Rai and Aashiq Kuruniyan

Kolkata, 21 June (H.S.). ATK Mohun Bagan have signed Ashish Rai and winger Aashiq Kuruniyan ahead of the Indian Super Football League (ISL) 2022-23 season.

The 23-year-old full-back player Ashish has been a key player for Hyderabad FC in the last two seasons and has been instrumental in helping them win their maiden ISL title in the 2021-22 season. Aashiq has been one of the top performers for Bengaluru FC in the last few seasons.

Rai started his youth career in 2017 when he joined Pune City Academy. Then later he joined the Indian Arrows team in November. In the 2018–19 season, he made the most of his opportunities, appearing in every game for the Arrows.

Playing for Indian Arrows proved to be a turning point in his career, with solid performances throughout the season helping him secure an ISL contract from Hyderabad FC ahead of the 2019-20 season.

Since joining the club, 23-year-old Ashish has played 48 matches. Although Rai didn’t make a great start to his ISL career at Hyderabad FC in his first season, he did take advantage of the arrival of head coach Manuel Marquez. He flourished under his guidance and went on to become one of the best full-backs in the ISL.

Aashiq started his career with Pune FC Academy and then moved on loan to Villarreal “C” team in Spain in 2016. As his stay in Europe was cut short by injury, the Kerala-born winger returned home. He joined Pune City FC in 2017 and made his debut in the ISL 2017-18 season against Jamshedpur.

After spending two years at Pune City FC, the 23-year-old winger moved to Bengaluru FC in the 2019-2020 season. He completed an impressive stint with the club with a total of 39 matches so far.

Aashiq, has recently been instrumental in qualifying the Indian national team for the 2023 AFC Asian Cup. Over time he has become a mainstay in the national team and is part of coach Igor Stimac’s future plans.
