Navratri 2022: Why do not eat onion-garlic in Navratri……
Sharadiya Navratri is starting from 26 September 2022. During these nine days, the Goddess will be worshiped by setting up ghats in temples, houses and grand pavilions. During Navratri, people worship Goddess Durga and observe a fast. Fasting involves consuming a sattvik diet that includes grains, fruits and vegetables. Those who do not fast also eat sattvik food. Avoid eating garlic-onion in food for nine days.
As soon as the ocean was churned between the gods and the demons, nine gems came out of it and finally nectar came out. After this Lord Vishnu took the form of Mohini and offered nectar to the deities. Then two demons Rahu-Ketu took the form of gods and drank that nectar.
After this Lord Vishnu cut them both into two parts with Sudarshan Chakra as punishment. It is believed that when his head was severed, a few drops of his blood fell on the ground and gave birth to garlic onions. Therefore, onions and garlic give a pungent smell. It is also said that Rahu-Ketu had few drops of nectar in their body, hence they have the ability to fight diseases.
Shardiya Navratri falls in the month of October-November, during which the season changes from autumn to winter season. The immune system weakens due to the changing seasons. In such a situation, eating sattvik food during this season keeps the digestive system healthy and toxins come out from the body. Onions and garlic are considered to be tamasic in nature and increase the mental and emotional energy in the body, causing the mind to wander. Therefore, onion and garlic should not be eaten during Navratri fast.
