‘Gandhigiri’ came in handy! College girl students won 135 years old battle in 20 days

about 300 girls won the 135 years long war in just 20 days. That too at the cost of ‘Gandhigiri’. These girls have shown that even the biggest of battles can be won with non-violence and peace. This case pertains to Nizam College, Hyderabad. The college is a part of Osmania University, which was established in 1887. Since the establishment of Nizam College, girls hostel has never been given. Here the girl students taking admission in graduation had to stay in a private girls hostel in Hyderabad by paying a hefty amount.

This type of arrangement is very strange in any educational institution in the 21st century. Even more surprising is that the hostel facility was provided to the girl students taking admission in PG course in Nizam College. But not UG. About 300 college students went on strike against this discrimination against girls. Totally peaceful strike.

Strike every day from 10 am to 5 pm

Everyday from 10 am to 5 pm, these girls used to leave the class and sit on dharna with posters in hand. He also applied to the Education Department. These students, aged about 17-18 years, spoke openly even in front of Telangana Education Minister Sabita Indra Reddy. Unless the government takes some action.

Finally after about 20 days the Government of Telangana gave a new hostel building to the college. This building with 76 rooms will now become the Girls Hostel of Nizam College. About 400 girls can sit in it.

Till now the Nizam College, affiliated to Osmania State University, had a hostel of 98 rooms for boys taking admission in undergraduate degree courses. The hostel PG of 90 rooms was meant for boys. Hostels were allotted this year for girl students taking admission in PG.

According to media reports, a student involved in the demonstration said, ‘We come from rural areas of Telangana. We have to pay 6000 rupees every month to stay in private hostels here. When we took admission here, the college administration said that a new girls hostel is coming up, soon we will be allotted. Last November 4, we saw that worship is being done in the new hostel, but the rooms are being given only to the girls of Master’s course. Then we decided to speak for ourselves.

According to the Principal of Nizam College, the hostel fee in the campus for general and OBC category is Rs 100. 10,000 and for SC, ST Rs. 7000 is one year old. 4 students can stay in one room. But girls in large numbers have decided to adjust and live.
