When PM Modi called the External Affairs Minister in the middle of the night and asked… ‘Are you awake?’
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, who arrived in New York, shared his experience of working with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Meanwhile, he also praised PM Modi’s leadership ability and said that handling the consequences of big decisions is also his special quality. The External Affairs Minister recalled the 2016 attack on the Indian Consulate in Afghanistan. “It was midnight and our consulate in Mazar-e-Sharif, Afghanistan, was attacked and we were using phones to find out what had happened,” he said. He said that ‘all this was going on and information was being given to everyone through phone. Then my phone rang. No caller id comes when PM calls. His first question was – are you awake?’
The External Affairs Minister further said that the PM asked him ‘are you awake…watching good TV…what is happening there.’ Regarding the conversation with the PM, Jaishankar said that ‘I told him that it will take a few more hours and I will call his office. To which he replied – call me ‘. Meanwhile, India was relentlessly supporting the campaign to evacuate people from the country.
How was the first meeting with PM Modi?
Jaishankar says that I used to like Modi ji even after meeting him. As people complain I keep people busy on some level. I may be in trouble, but the level of preparation he has done is commendable.
External Affairs Minister says that ‘PM Modi starts his day at 7.30 am…and it goes on and doesn’t stop, while others may stop.’
He also recalled the time of last year’s Afghanistan crisis. Even at that time, India evacuated all the civilians who wanted to leave Afghanistan safely through rescue operations.
Apart from the UN General Assembly, Jaishankar met diplomats and heads of state over the past three days. On Saturday, he will address other world leaders at the General Assembly. After that they will leave for Washington. Here he will meet his American counterpart Anthony Blinken.
