Kolkata : A Bengali writer and folk culture researcher on Tuesday returned the award given by the Academy in protest against the Paschimbanga Bangla Akademi’s decision to give a special award to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for her contribution in the field of literature. Ratna Rashid Banerjee has returned the ‘Annadashankar Roy Memorial Award’, from which the Academy honored her in the year 2019.
In a letter to Academy President and Education Minister Bratya Basu, Rashid Banerjee claimed that in view of the Akademi’s decision to confer a new literary award to the Chief Minister on the birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore, the award has become a “crown of thorns” for him. . Rashid Banerjee said, ‘In the letter, I have informed him about my decision to return the award with immediate effect. As a writer, I feel humiliated by the move of conferring the literary award to the Chief Minister. This will set a bad precedent. That statement of the Academy is a mockery of the truth, in which the relentless efforts of the Chief Minister have been praised in the field of literature. Ratna Rashid Bandyopadhyay said in a statement, I am returning the Annada Shankar Memorial Award given on 26 July 2019 with this letter.
In fact, the award, instituted this year, was announced on Monday at a program organized by the state government to celebrate Tagore’s birth anniversary, for the Chief Minister’s book ‘Kavita Bitan’, a collection of more than 900 poems. Meanwhile, Anadi Ranjan Bandyopadhyay has also resigned. According to him, the reason for honoring the Chief Minister of the state cannot be accepted.

On Tuesday morning, popular actress Sreelekha Mitra recited Mamata Banerjee’s poems ‘Epang Opang Jhapang’ and ‘Hamba’, mocking the Chief Minister.
