Tamil Nadu government starts preparations for 44th Chess Olympiad

Chennai: The Tamil Nadu government constituted 18 working committees, starting preparations for the 44th Chess Olympiad in Mahabalipuram. Also signed a contract with the All India Chess Federation (AICF), the central governing body of the game in India.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Tamil Nadu Government and AICF for organizing the tournament to be held at Mahabalipuram from July 28 to August 10 was signed in the presence of Chief Minister MK Stalin. Minister of State for Youth Welfare, Sports and Environment Siva V Meyanathan, Chief Secretary V Irai Anbu, Principal Secretary Apoorva, SDAT member R Anandkumar, Olympiad Special Officer Darrej Ahmed, AICF President Sanjay Kapoor, AICF Secretary Bharat Singh Chauhan were also present on the occasion. .

According to the order issued on May 13, the government has constituted 18 working committees for activities like reception, transportation, sponsorship, opening and closing ceremony, hospitality, security during the Olympiad. The tournament was initially scheduled to be held in Russia, but was stripped of its hosting by the country following its attack on Ukraine in February. Later it was hosted by Chennai. Apart from Olympiad, FIDE Congress and elections will also be held during this period.
