The Nupur Sharma controversy took a new turn when a video of a woman being dragged by police personnel and thrashed by a mob surfaced on social media. The alleged video was shared by several users on Facebook and Twitter. While many users immediately termed it as fake, most congratulated the police for ‘arresting Nupur Sharma’! Ever since his controversial remarks on Prophet Mohammad, there has been an outcry for Sharma’s arrest.
Zee News tried to conduct an independent investigation and a reverse image search by splitting the viral video did not bring us any news that substantiates the alleged arrest. After investigation and confirmation, it was found that the woman in the video is not Nupur Sharma, but Bhumi Birmi, Churu District President of the Bharatiya Kisan Sangh (Women’s Wing).

The Bharatiya Janata Party had suspended its spokesperson Nupur Sharma from the primary membership of the party following her alleged inflammatory remarks against minorities. Nupur Sharma later addressed the Delhi Police and said that she was getting threats. “: @CPDelhi I am being bombarded with rape, death and beheading threats against my sister, mother, father and myself. I have reported this to @DelhiPolice. If anything untoward happens to me or any of my family members… Nupur Sharma tweeted on May 27.
Delhi Police had confirmed that it has provided security to Sharma as an FIR was lodged on a complaint that he was receiving death threats after his controversial religious remarks.
Nupur Sharma has been in the eye of a storm as her comments also attracted a letter from Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS), which warned of suicide bombings in Indian cities to avenge insults to the Prophet. The provocative remarks made by BJP leaders Nupur Sharma and Naveen Kumar Jindal have also created a furore in the Arab world. Many Arab countries including Saudi Arabia and Bahrain have condemned Nupur Sharma’s controversial statement.
