ONORC program: Ration portability program implemented across the country, ration can be found anywhere at subsidized rates

New Delhi: Assam has finally joined the ‘One Nation, One Ration Card’ program of the Central Government. The Food Ministry on Tuesday said it has implemented a nationwide ration portability programme. Under the National Food Security Act 2013 (NFSA), the beneficiaries of ONRC can get food grains at subsidized rates from any of the outlet ration dealers. For this, the beneficiary will have to get the biometric identity verified.

The ministry said that Assam is the 36th state/UT to be a part of ONORC. In addition, the program has been implemented in all states and union territories. The ONORC program was launched in August 2019. The Ministry said that the Ration Portability Program is playing a vital role in ensuring the availability of food grains at subsidized rates to the NFSE beneficiaries. It has helped a lot for migrant workers, especially during the Corona pandemic of the last two years. Under ration portability, since 2019 till now about 71 crore transactions have been done. Food grains worth about Rs 40,000 crore have been made available at subsidized rates.

There are currently an average of 30 million portability transactions per month. This NFSA provides free food grains to the beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Food Scheme (PMGKAY) at subsidized rates. The ministry said that 64 crore portable transactions have taken place in the Corona period since April 2020, in which food grains worth Rs 36,000 crore have been made available at concessional rates. Out of 640 million portable transactions, 278 million are under PMGKAY. This scheme was announced in March 2020 to help people in Corona.
