New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Saturday allowed the demolition of a 350-year-old building of the Patna District Collector’s office, saying not every colony needs to be protected. The building was used by the British as a warehouse for storing opium and salt (approval of the demolition of the 350-year-old building).

Earlier, the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage, Patna Division had challenged the decision to demolish the building in the Supreme Court. It claims that the building is an integral part of the city’s culture and heritage, which should be preserved and restored rather than demolished. The state government had issued an order on 31 July 2019 to replace the dilapidated building with a new one, but the Supreme Court ordered status quo to be maintained in September 2020.

justice. A bench of Justices Dhananjay Y Chandrachud and Surya Kant said, “We have a large number of buildings since the colonial period. Some date back to the British period, the Dutch period, and even the French period. There may be buildings of historical importance that can be preserved but not all buildings.

The Bihar government, through senior advocate Maninder Singh, submitted that the building was in dilapidated condition and posed a serious threat to the people. The state further told the court that the Bihar Civil Arts and Heritage Commission had approved the demolition of the collector’s premises on June 4, 2020.

In 1972, the Archaeological Survey of India conducted a survey in Bihar and identified 72 sites that qualify as historical buildings. Even then Patna District Collector Bhawan was not included in the list.
