Former Union Minister Pandit Sukh Ram passes away
Shimla : Veteran Congress leader and former Union Minister Pandit Sukh Ram has passed away. He was 94 years old. Sukh Ram was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi on 7 May. Ashray Sharma, grandson of Sukh Ram, a Himachal Pradesh Congress leader, wrote in a Facebook post late on Wednesday night, ‘Adiyu dadaji, ab phone nahi bajega (Goodbye dadaji, now phone ki bell will not ring)’. However, the post did not say when he breathed his last.
Sharma also posted his childhood photo with Sukhram on Facebook. Sukhram had a brain stroke in Manali on May 4, after which he was admitted to the regional hospital in Mandi. From there he was airlifted to Delhi on Saturday for better treatment at AIIMS. Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur had arranged for a helicopter to take the veteran political leader to Delhi on May 7.
Sukh Ram was the Union Minister of State for Communications (Independent Charge) from 1993 to 1996. He was a member of the Lok Sabha from the Mandi constituency of Himachal Pradesh. He won assembly elections five times and Lok Sabha elections thrice. In 2011, he was sentenced to five years in prison for corruption. Sukhram’s son Anil Sharma is a BJP MLA from Mandi.
