CBI’s nationwide campaign against Home Ministry officials, NGOs over FCRA violations
New Delhi : The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has conducted operations at 40 places across the country for getting clearance of foreign donations allegedly in violation of FCRA norms. Around 14 people have been arrested, including officials of the Union Home Ministry, representatives of NGOs and middlemen. The officers provided this information.
A Home Ministry spokesperson said that the operation was launched after the CBI received a complaint in this regard from the Union Home Ministry. Officials said that when the matter of alleged violation of the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act came to the notice of Home Minister Amit Shah, he directed that the strictest possible action should be taken against those involved in it. He said that then the Ministry of Home Affairs lodged a complaint with the CBI.
He said that formalities related to arrest are being completed against some of the officers and others who have been arrested in this case. Officials said during the agency’s operation it was found that several officials were allegedly involved in bribery transactions in getting foreign grants to several NGOs in violation of FCRA norms.
He said that coordinated operation is going on in about 40 places including some places in Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad, Coimbatore, Mysore and Rajasthan. According to officials, hawala transactions worth about Rs 2 crore have been detected so far in the campaign.
