Agartala: Manik Saha takes oath as CM after major political upheaval
Manik Saha took oath as the new Chief Minister of Tripura on Sunday. The Governor administered the oath of office to him at 11.30 am at Raj Bhavan in Agartala. Earlier on Saturday, Biplab Deb abruptly resigned from the post of Chief Minister, triggering a major political crisis. However, Manik Saha’s name was stamped soon after his resignation.
Manik Saha is a dentist by profession and his image is considered very clean. Manik is not considered to be a BJP camp. Manik Saha left Congress and joined BJP in 2016. After joining the BJP, Manik was made the state president in 2020 after four years. He also became the President of Tripura Cricket Association. Now BJP has honored him with the Chief Minister’s crown.
Angry with the performance of MLA Biplab Deb
There was displeasure among many MLAs about Biplab Deb’s style of functioning. As a result, three MLAs also resigned. Significantly, it is also being said that Biplab Deb overthrew the 25-year-old Left government in Tripura and led BJP to victory in 2018. Now there is talk of sending him to the Rajya Sabha because Manik Saha was elected to the Rajya Sabha just a month ago. One Rajya Sabha seat has fallen vacant in the state after he was elected as the Chief Minister.
Assembly elections are due in Tripura next year. Tripura has a 60-member assembly. In the last elections, the BJP formed the government for the first time by winning 36 seats in the state and ended the long-standing Left rule there. The Left parties won only 16 seats in that election.
