A look at the political journey of former Union Minister Pandit Sukh Ram

Market: Pandit Sukhram, who was called Chanakya of politics in Himachal, has passed away. Pandit Sukhram was 95 years old. Sukhram (political journey of pandit sukh ram) had influence in the politics of the country including the state. Sukhram has also been a minister in the central government. He is also known for the communication revolution in the state and the country. However, while being the Telecom Minister at the center, Sukhram was also accused of corruption.

Sukhram contested 13 times from the Sadar Assembly Constituency and won each time. Along with this, he also contested the Lok Sabha elections and held different ministerial posts at the Centre. In 1984, Sukh Ram contested the first Lok Sabha election on a Congress ticket and reached the Parliament after winning with a huge majority.

In the 1989 Lok Sabha elections, Sukh Ram had to face defeat and BJP’s Maheshwar Singh won the Parliament. In the 1991 Lok Sabha elections, Sukhram entered the Parliament by defeating Maheshwar Singh. In 1996, Sukh Ram again won the election and reached the Lok Sabha.

In 1998, Pandit Sukh Ram separated from the Congress and formed his own party in the name of Himachal Vikas Congress (HIVC). However, HIVC could not do anything special in the Lok Sabha elections and only Colonel Dhaniram Shandil from his party was able to reach Parliament by winning.

Hivikan got a lot of discussion in the politics of the state. In the 1998 elections, the HIVC won 5 seats. BJP-Congress got 31-31 seats. After which HIVC played an important role to form the government. HIVC supported the BJP. Virbhadra Singh missed out on becoming the Chief Minister and Prem Kumar Dhumal became the Chief Minister for the first time.

Pandit Sukhram contested his last assembly election in 2003 and then retired from active politics in 2007 and handed over his political legacy to his son Anil Sharma. In the 2017 assembly elections, Pandit Sukhram family joined BJP and Anil Sharma contested the election from BJP ticket and won. He also got a ministerial post in the Jairam government.

In the Lok Sabha elections 2019, Pandit Sukhram again joined the Congress to get a ticket for his grandson Ashray. Anil Sharma has resigned from the post of minister from Jairam government after Ashray went to Congress and all the facilities of ministerial post have been taken away from him.
