A family forced to live amongst the ruins in Bowbazar, Kolkata
Bowbazar (Kolkata): Bowbazar’s Saikrapara Lane was a traditional and vibrant area in old Kolkata but with the growth of the city, the Saikrapara Lane now looks deserted. Due to landslides and emerging cracks due to metro railway construction, the street has almost disappeared as only two out of 15 houses are standing there.
Only three houses stand in a corner and no house is less than 100 years old. The houses have gradually deteriorated over time. A major setback nearly two and a half years ago forced the evacuation of two of the three houses. Two days ago, cracks appeared in the one house which is yet to be demolished, which made headlines. So now the Dutt family lives alone in the entire Saikrapara Lane which is almost on the verge of extinction due to two accidents.
There is no sign of the 12 houses that once stood tall. East-West Metro work The other two houses have been vacated recently along with families who relocated with their belongings after the cracks developed. Standing by the dilapidated verandah of a single two-storey house, 76-year-old Gorachand Dutta and his wife Shubhra Dutta, 70, recalled nostalgia, saying it is too difficult now. Our neighborhood was so nice that everyone used to laugh and talk with each other.
I miss them so much. Everyone in the neighborhood loved each other. There were 15 houses in the neighbourhood. Neighbors used to come and say, body cha khan (bodi we will drink tea) and were happy to have tea with them too. But now it is only zero. Shubhra Dutta told ETV Bharat that the storey verandah of the only dilapidated house that still stands amidst the ruins.
