Govardhan took the green
It is a well known fact that Lord Krishna held the Govardhan Parvat for 7 consecutive days in his touching courtyard. And in fact the arrangement of 56 yagyas to be offered to God is also related to this story. According to this story, Mother Yashoda used to feed Balakrishna eight times a day. But once Indra’s anger descended on Vraj. And it rained heavily. To save the people of Vraja from this rain, Lord Krishna lifted the Govardhan mountain with his forefinger. Only seven years old Kanudo stood holding Govardhan for 7 consecutive days. Also, without consuming food and water!
Defeated by the green color of the Lord, Indra finally realized his mistake. He stopped the rain on the eighth day, apologizing to God. Lord Krishna also asked all the people of Vraj to come out from under the Govardhan mountain. But Krishna, who used to eat 8 meals a day and was hungry for 7 days in a row, became very unhappy with the people of Vraja and Maiya Yashoda. In the end, Mother Yashoda, along with all the Vrajvasis, made fifty-six dishes and eight prahars (7×8=56) in 7 days, showing her unique faith in the Lord. And those 56 victims fed Balagopal by paying a price. It is believed that since then the practice of offering 56 victims to Thakorji started.
