Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Friday said that on the occasion of ‘Karnataka Rajyotsava’, the state foundation day on November 1, Kannada film actor Puneeth Rajkumar will be awarded the ‘Karnataka Ratna’ posthumously. will be honored. The actor passed away last year. He will be the 10th person to be awarded the state’s highest civilian honour. Basavaraj Bommai said, “We have decided to confer the Karnataka Ratna award to Puneeth Rajkumar on November 1, we will form a committee for its preparation which will also include the family members of Rajkumar.

It will be conducted with all due respect. The Chief Minister inaugurated the annual Independence Day Flower Show at Lalbaug Glass-House here. This year’s flower show saw a special floral tribute to Kannada actor Dr Rajkumar and his son and actor Puneeth Rajkumar. Puneeth, considered a shining star of Kannada cinema, was the youngest of five children of Kannada actor Dr Rajkumar. He died of heart failure on 29 October at the age of 46. The Chief Minister had in November last year announced the award to the late actor at an event organized by the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce in association with the Film Actors and Technicians Association to pay tribute to Puneeth Rajkumar.
The Karnataka Ratna was last awarded to Dr Virendra Hegde for social service in 2009. Interestingly, Puneeth’s late father Rajkumar is among the first to receive the Karnataka Ratna award in 1992 along with poet Kuvempu. Other personalities honored with the award are S Nijalingappa (Politics), CNR Rao (Science), Dr Devi Prasad Shetty (Medicine), Bhimsen Joshi (Music), Shivakumara Swamiji (Social Service) and Dr J Javre Gowda (Education and Literature).
