TRAI New Tariff: Now cable and DTH bills will be cheaper!  A major change in rules by TRAI will be effective from February 1

TRAI New Tariff Order 2.0: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India on Tuesday amended the New Tariff Order (NTO) 2.0. Now cable and DTH customers can get relief. Under the new rule, channels priced below Rs 19 will be included in the bouquet. Due to this, TRAI Secretary V. Raghunandan has issued a notification regarding the new rules.

45% Discount

As per the notification regarding the new rules, all broadcasters, while pricing their bouquets of pay channels, may allow a maximum discount of 45 per cent on the sum of the MRPs of all pay channels in that bouquet. At present, only 33 percent discount can be given. TRAI says that the MRP of a pay channel will be based on the combined subscription of that channel in the bouquet along with the discount offered by the broadcaster.

These new rules of TRA will be applicable from 1 February 2023. TRAI says that all distributors of television channels shall ensure that by February 1, 2023, services are provided to the consumers as per the book or channels selected by them.

TRAI has also said that all broadcasters will inform channel name, language, MRP of channels and composition of bouquet of channels and any change in MRP by December 16, 2022.

Madhavan on Tuesday welcomed the amendment proposed by TRAI, saying it was the result of a constructive dialogue between the industry and the regulator. NTO 2.0 is the result of strong collaboration between the industry and TRAI. Negotiations were held to meet long pending demands, following which there has been an emphasis on creating an enabling environment for the industry.

Last week, TRAI chairman PD Vaghela told the CII Big Picture Summit in New Delhi that it may issue new tariff orders and amendments to interconnection rules in line with the announced policy of light-touch regulation.
