India on 11th May national technology day Celebrates what it is today. Because on this day in 1998, India had succeeded in the famous Pokhran nuclear test.
History of Pokhran Nuclear Test
The defining milestone in India’s journey in scientific and technological progress is the successful nuclear tests conducted in 1998 in the Pokhran region of Rajasthan. Atal Vihari Vajpayee, the then Prime Minister of India, led this great mission of making India an independent nuclear power. This study is known as ‘Pokhran-2’. Successful nuclear tests were conducted on 11 May 1998.
A dedicated team of scientists, researchers and engineers was formed under this study. Who worked day and night for India. The mission was highly confidential, as India did not wish to attract any international comment.
These nuclear tests in Pokhran were conducted at the Pokhran test range of the Indian Army. A series of 5 nuclear explosions were carried out for the successful test. In which the so-called ‘Missile Man’ of India and the then President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam was the star guide of the Pokhran trials.
After completing this successful test, the then Prime Minister of India Atal Bihari Vajpayee declared India a nuclear state. The code for this mission was ‘Operation Shakti’. Globally, five other current members of the Nuclear Club opposed its promotion. So this mission was carried out under a special code. The success of this private mission is being considered as a major milestone in India’s journey of scientific success.
Two decades ago today, India was not fully equipped to carry out this mission. The success of the situation during the Pokhran nuclear tests had raised the country’s recognition across the world.
In future, with a vision to reach equal levels and greater heights of success in future technical and scientific pursuits, India celebrates National Technology Day across the country today i.e. 11th May.
