Apple and Samsung are the major mobile exporting players in the country. However, Apple has overtaken Samsung by a significant margin in mobile exports. Three contract manufacturers manufacture and export phones for Apple in the country. They export the iPhone 12, 13 and 14 Plus models. Government circles said that some small exporters also export iPhones from India. Apple’s contract manufacturers Faxcon Honor Hai and Pegatron have factories in Tamil Nadu. While Wistron has a factory in Karnataka. These three companies are participating in the government’s Smartphone Production Linked Incentive (PLI). They have to provide data on production, exports, investment and jobs to the government from time to time.

According to the estimates of the government, in the current financial year 2022-23, there will be mobile exports worth about $ 9 billion from the country. Which will be higher than the $5.8 billion exports seen last year. This will enable an increase in production and exports from manufacturers. According to officials, exports of $1 billion per month make Apple the leader of the government’s ambitious PLI scheme. The government later extended this export to 13 sectors. Exports would have been even higher if Samsung’s unit had operated at full capacity, the official said. The South Korean company shut down its unit for 10-15 days for routine maintenance. Due to which production declined and exports were affected. Against the backdrop of growth in mobile exports, electronics exports from the country are expected to witness significant growth. According to the Commerce Department, electronics exports are set to grow by 51.56 per cent to $16.67 billion in the first nine months of April to December 2022.
