New Zealand Limited Overs Captain: Kane Williamson left the captaincy of New Zealand after the T20 World Cup 2024. Now Mitchell Santner has been made the permanent captain of limited overs in place of Williamson. Santner has captaincy experience and has previously led New Zealand. Now as a regular captain, he will start his tenure with the ODI and T20 series against Sri Lanka. After this, the Kiwi team will play a tri-series in Pakistan. Then the team also has to participate in the Champions Trophy. In such a situation, the new captain Santner will have to make a strategy from now on.
It is an honour to be captain
After getting the captaincy, Mitchell Santner said that it is a great honor and privilege. When you were a little kid, the dream was always to play for New Zealand, but getting the opportunity to officially lead your country in two formats is special. This is a new challenge and I am excited to join the important phase of limited overs that is ahead of us.
Has captained in 24 T20 International matches
32-year-old Mitchell Santner captained the New Zealand T20 team for the first time in the year 2020. After this, he also became the captain in the ODI against Scotland in the year 2022. Santner has captained New Zealand in 24 T20 International matches so far, out of which the team has won 13 and lost 9. He has also captained the team in four ODIs.
Strong performance on India tour
Mitchell Santner has always been considered a limited overs player. He has taken 108 wickets in 107 ODIs and 117 wickets in 106 T20 Internationals for the Kiwi team so far. New Zealand created a historic record by winning the Test series 3-0 on the India tour. Santner played an important role in that and emerged as the biggest hero for the team. He played only one match then. In the second Test match held in Pune, he took a total of 13 wickets and led the Kiwi team to victory by 113 runs. Due to his strong performance, Team India lost the match and the series. He has taken a total of 13 wickets in Test cricket so far.
