Prime Minister’s Museum and Library (PMML) has recently made a big demand from Congress MP Rahul Gandhi. This demand is related to India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. Former PM Nehru had written many letters to many great personalities during his time, which were with the Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial after his death. In 1971, these documents were given to Nehru Memorial Museum and Library (now PMML). Then in 2008, these documents were packed in 51 cardboard boxes and sent to Sonia Gandhi. Rizwan Qadri, a member of PMML, has demanded the return of these documents through a letter to the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi.
Documents are very important
Rizwan Qadri wrote this letter to Rahul Gandhi on 10 December, saying that these documents are an important aspect of the history of PMML and were taken back from the museum on the orders of senior Congress leader Sonia Gandhi. He further said that these documents are very important from the historical point of view. In such a situation, either get the original letters from Sonia Gandhi or get their photocopies or digital copies. Qadri said that before this he had also written a letter to Sonia Gandhi.
The documents were stuffed in 51 cardboard boxes
Historian, writer and PMML member Rizwan Qadri said, “In September 2024, I wrote a letter to Sonia Gandhi demanding these documents. We had said that the 51 cartons of documents taken back from the Nehru Memorial and Library in 2008 should be given to the institution. We should be given permission to see and scan them or a copy of them should be provided to us so that we can study them.”
Many important letters included
Qadri said that many important letters including those of Babu Jagjivan Ram, Jai Prakash Narayan, Edwina Mountbatten and other important letters related to history are present in it. Also important correspondence between Pandit Nehru and Lady Mountbatten, as well as letters written by JP Narana and others are included in it. Since there was no response from Sonia, I have requested her son Rahul Gandhi to get them back. We hope that the opposition leader will look into it and make it available for researchers. These documents are part of the country’s heritage and an important aspect of history.
