Mumbai. From veteran actors Dharmendra, Amol Palekar, Sharmila Tagore and Madhuri Dixit Nene to Divyendu, all the artists of the film industry from generation to generation respect the actor and visionary filmmaker Raj Kapoor. The birth centenary of the great actor, director and producer Raj Kapoor is being celebrated on Saturday. He made many memorable films like ‘Awara’, ‘Barsaat’, ‘Shri 420’, ‘Sangam’ and ‘Mera Naam Joker’ during his illustrious career of 40 years. He died in the year 1988. Amol Palekar, who played the role of a middle-class hero in parallel cinema in contrast to Raj Kapoor’s grand and broad stories, said that he admires the work of actor-filmmaker Raj Kapoor in the early phase of his career. Amol Palekar said, “We met only once, for a very short time but never after that. But, I especially admire the early phase of Raj Kapoor. He played a common man in a different way, a man who stumbles and makes mistakes.”

“His early films were what is seen today as left-wing thinking. All those films are about a common man, an oppressed person who is criticising, commenting about the system. That’s who Raj Kapoor was,” Palekar (80) told PTI. Sharmila Tagore credited Raj Kapoor and Dilip Kumar for making “acting a wonderful profession”. “From Dilip Kumar to Raj Kapoor, all of them have contributed to cinema. We are all very grateful to our great men. All of Raj Kapoor’s films are being re-released in theatres. I hope people watch them,” Tagore said. Madhuri Dixit described Raj Kapoor as a passionate and visionary filmmaker who was willing to go to extraordinary distances to make great cinema. “Raj ji was a very passionate filmmaker,” said Madhuri. I heard he would mortgage or even sell his house to build sets or do whatever he could to make a beautiful film.

Veteran actor Dharmendra posted an old photo with Raj Kapoor on social media. Dharmendra (89) wrote in a post on Instagram, “Dear Raj sahab, wishing you a very happy birthday. We miss you so much! You will always be remembered with great love and respect. ” Anil Kapoor said that Raj Kapoor’s birthday is special not only for him but for the entire Indian film industry. Actor Divyendu, who made a special mark with the web series ‘Mirzapur’, said that Kapoor is the “author of Indian cinema”.
