New York: An Indian-origin student pursuing PhD at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US has been suspended till January 2026 due to his pro-Palestine activism. The Indian-origin student has appealed against the university’s decision. The name of the suspended student is Prahlad Iyengar. Iyengar has put forth his views in the context of Palestine, criticising the pacifist strategy in an essay published in the college magazine.

Restrictions on entry into campus

The essay written by Iyengar is titled ‘On Pacifism’. The essay also included the logo of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, which the US government considers a terrorist organization. MIT has banned Iyengar’s entry into the campus, considering this essay to be a promotion of violent activities. The university believes that the language used in the essay and the presence of the logo are inciting violence.

The student was suspended earlier as well

However, Prahlad Iyengar has denied these allegations and said that his intention was only to express his opinion and he did not support violence. However, this is not the first time Iyengar has been suspended. Last year he was also suspended due to pro-Palestine demonstrations.

Academic career will be affected

Meanwhile, an organization named ‘MIT Coalition Against Apartheid’ shared a post on X stating that National Science Foundation Fellow Prahlad Iyengar has been “suspended till January 2026”. The organization said that this suspension will end Iyengar’s five-year NSF fellowship and will affect his academic career.
