Istanbul: After the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, the series of deaths in Lebanon has stopped, but it is continuing in Gaza. Dozens of people are being killed every day in Israeli air strikes. But now it is hoped that this orgy of deaths will soon stop in Gaza as well. A Hamas leader on Thursday claimed that ceasefire talks with Israel have resumed. Hamas said that international mediators have resumed talks with Hamas and Israel for a ceasefire in Gaza and an agreement is expected to end the 14-month-long war.

Qatar suspended talks with Egyptian and US mediators last month, frustrated by the lack of progress in ceasefire talks between Israel and Hamas. Hamas leader Bassem Naim told Turkiye that efforts to end the war, release hostages from Gaza and free Palestinian prisoners in Israel had been “reactivated” in recent days. Another official with knowledge of the talks, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that the Qatari mediators had resumed talks. The global and regional landscape has changed significantly since the talks were interrupted.

After Trump was elected president, the war fighters’ perspective started changing.

Donald Trump has won the US presidential election and last week a ceasefire was declared between Israel and Hamas’ ally Hezbollah in Lebanon. Trump is a staunch supporter of Israel, but Naim believes a future US administration “can positively influence the situation” as Trump made stopping wars in the region a part of his election campaign. Hamas-led extremists launched an attack in southern Israel on October 7, 2023, killing about 1,200 people and taking about 250hostagese. At least 44,500 Palestinians have been killed in Israel’s fierce counter-offensive since then, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry.
