External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Thursday said Indian companies should adopt a balanced approach in trade with China as too much dependence on its supply chain can be detrimental to the country’s national interest. He said at an event of the industry body Assocham that he is not asking the Indian industry not to do business with that country. Responding to a question on relations with China, he said that many supply chains will have to pass through this country, which has a 32-33 percent share in global manufacturing. He said that this is a reality, which we have to keep in mind.

Gotta be careful

Jaishankar said, “But it is also a fact that if you become overly dependent on a single supply chain or in the name of supply chain you open up your market so much that it is no longer a supply chain but it hollows out your sectors, then you have to be careful.” He said, “No one is saying not to do business. But we are saying that think about it, evaluate it, consider its wider consequences.”

Geopolitical tensions are also a matter of concern.

The foreign minister also briefly referred to the nearly four-and-a-half-year-long border standoff between the two countries along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh, which ended last month. On a question about disruption in the movement of ships in the Red Seagivenf the situation in West Asia, Jaishankar said it affects trade. He said, “I think this is a matter of great concern for us. We have tried to do our job. We have also deployed some naval ships. “Jaishankar said that alternative routes for supplies are increasing transportation costs and talks are being held with all major parties, including Iran and Israel, in this regard.
