WhatsApp Wedding Card Fraud: The New Cyber Threat

India is in the midst of the wedding season, but this joyous time has caught the attention of cybercriminals. These fraudsters target people to drain their bank accounts with a new scam. Police from four Indian states have issued alerts about this emerging threat. Using the wedding season as bait, these scammers are deceiving individuals with a clever trick.

How Scammers Are Targeting WhatsApp Users

According to a report by the Economic Times, scammers are using WhatsApp to send wedding invitation cards embedded with malicious APK files. When unsuspecting users download and install these files, harmful malware is installed on their devices.

This malware allows scammers to:

  • Gain access to the user’s phone.
  • Steal sensitive information, including bank details and OTPs.
  • Drain financial resources directly from bank accounts.

In one recent incident from Rajasthan, a victim lost ₹4.5 lakh to this scam after downloading a fraudulent wedding card.

Police Alerts from Four States

Recognizing the gravity of the situation, police from four states—Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Gujarat—have issued warnings to the public.

Key Warnings Include:

  1. Avoid clicking on any APK file or wedding card links received on WhatsApp from unknown sources.
  2. Understand that these files can secretly install malware on your phone, giving hackers complete control.

Steps to Stay Safe from the Scam

Protect yourself from this dangerous scam by following these essential precautions:

1. Be Cautious of Unknown Numbers

If you receive messages from unfamiliar numbers, especially those containing links or files, do not open them.

2. Do Not Click Suspicious Links

Avoid clicking on any link or downloading suspicious attachments, even if they appear to be from someone you know.

3. Keep Your Software Updated

Ensure your phone’s operating system and apps are updated to the latest version. Updates often include important security patches.

4. Use Strong Passwords

Always use complex passwords for your accounts and change them periodically to enhance security.

5. Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)

Activate 2FA on your banking apps and important accounts to add an extra layer of protection.

6. Report to Cybercrime Authorities

If you suspect fraudulent activity, immediately contact the cybercrime branch or the helpline number 1930.

What to Do If You Fall Victim to the Scam?

If you accidentally download the APK file or suspect that your phone has been compromised:

  1. Immediately Contact Your Bank: Request them to freeze any suspicious transactions.
  2. Format Your Device: Remove the malware by performing a factory reset. However, back up important data first.
  3. Report to Cybercrime: File a complaint with your local cybercrime unit to help track down the fraudsters.
