The alliance between the National People’s Party (NPP) and BJP in Manipur has ended. NPP has withdrawn support from the Biren Singh government. In a letter written to BJP national president JP Nadda, NPP has said that Biren Singh’s government has failed to stop the violence in Manipur.
The Conrad Sangma-led National People’s Party has expressed deep concern over the current law and order situation in the state. The party said that dissatisfied with the way the crisis was handled and the loss of innocent lives, it has announced to withdraw support from the government with immediate effect.
What was written in the letter?
The letter issued by the NPP said, “We strongly feel that the Manipur State Government led by Biren Singh has completely failed to resolve the crisis and restore normalcy. Keeping in mind the current situation, the National People’s Party has decided to withdraw its support from the Biren Singh-led government in the state of Manipur with immediate effect.” Violence has erupted once again in Manipur. There has been a conflict between the people of the Meitei and Kuki communities since May last year, which has once again taken a violent turn. There have been continuous protests here after the death of three children and three women.
Biren Singh’s government will not fall.
The breaking of the alliance with the NPP is a big setback for the BJP. However, the BJP government will remain in the state. The BJP still has a majority in the 60-member Manipur Assembly. The BJP currently has 37 seats, which is more than the 31 required for a majority. This includes five MLAs of the Janata Dal (United), who joined the BJP in late 2022. Apart from this, the BJP also has the support of five MLAs of the Naga People’s Front (NPF), one MLA of the JD(U), and three independent MLAs.
