In his post, Aryan wrote, ‘I never considered quitting the sport that has been my passion, my love and my escape. But here I am facing a painful reality. As a trans woman on hormone replacement therapy (HRT), my body has changed a lot. I am losing my muscles, strength, muscle memory, and athletic abilities that I once relied on. The sport I loved for a long time is slipping away from me.’

What is hormone replacement therapy?

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is a treatment that doctors commonly use to treat symptoms of menopause. It helps balance the levels of progesterone and estrogen hormones in the body. It has also been used to change gender at birth, like in Aryan’s case. There are two types of hormone replacement therapy. Feminizing and virilizing hormone therapy. When a man changes from a male to a female through hormones, feminizing therapy is given for this.

What changes does feminizing hormone therapy bring

Through feminizing hormone therapy, changes are made inside a man, and female hormones are produced inside him. Masculine characteristics are reduced with this therapy. Estrogen and androgen blockers are used. This helps in removing facial hair, changing voice, and breast development.

Disadvantages of Feminizing Hormone Therapy

This type of therapy brings about changes in the body but it can also have many side effects. Many researches have shown that this therapy affects fertility and sexual function. Sometimes it also increases the risk of cancer. In such cases, the risk of getting endometrial, breast, and ovarian cancer can increase.
