Guwahati: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday said India wants to continue the peace process with China through consensus, following the path shown by former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Addressing Indian Army jawans at the Gajraj Corps headquarters in Tezpur on the occasion of ‘Bada Khana’, he praised the soldiers’ efforts in the peace process. “We want to continue this peace process through consensus. Our former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee had said that we can change friends but not neighbours. We want to maintain good relations with our neighbors and this is India’s clear policy,” he said.

‘Northeast is very important from a security point of view’

The Defence Minister said that although sometimes such situations arise that a war has to be fought to protect the country’s borders, the government is making every possible effort to maintain peace. Rajnath said, ‘This is not a small thing, this is a very big thing. We have achieved all this only because of you. This mutual dialogue has been possible because everyone is aware of your courage and valor. The Northeast is very important from a security point of view. This region is as beautiful from the natural point of view as it is challenging from the geographical point of view.’ The Defence Minister said that India and China have been talking for a long time to resolve the issues.

Rajnath had to cancel his visit to Tawang.

Rajnath Singh said, ‘This is a major development related to the border on the LAC. After our efforts, we have reached a consensus on the ground situation on the LAC.’ Indian Army sources said on Wednesday that after an important agreement between India and China, the withdrawal of troops from the two deadlocked places on the LAC in eastern Ladakh, Demchok and Depsang, has been completed and patrolling will be started soon in these places. The Defense Minister was to visit Tawang during the day but had to cancel his visit due to bad weather. He will now go to Tawang on Thursday. ‘Bada Khana’ is a banquet in which personnel of all ranks eat together.
