Domestic air travel increased tremendously in September, this many people flew in 30 days

The number of domestic air passengers in India increased again in September 2024. According to data released by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), domestic airlines carried 1.30 crore passengers to their destinations in September. This is 6.38 percent more than the same period last year. According to PTI news, in September last year, airlines carried 1.22 crore passengers to their destinations. The ever-increasing number of airports and flights in India has also helped to increase the number of passengers.

Indigo’s market share rises to 63%

According to the news, according to the DGCA, IndiGo’s market share increased to 63 percent in September 2024, while Air India’s share increased to 15.1 percent. AIX Connect, which merged with Air India Express this month, topped the list of airlines in terms of on-time performance (OTP) with 70.1 percent, replacing Akasa Air, whose on-time performance came down to 62.1 percent. Data shows that Vistara’s market share fell to 10 percent last month and AIX Connect’s share fell to 4.1 percent.

Air India Group’s total domestic market share is 29.2%

The total domestic market share of Air India Group, including Air India, AIX Connect, and Vistara, reached 29.2 percent. In September, Akasa Air and SpiceJet carried 5.73 lakh and 2.61 lakh passengers respectively to destinations. Akasa Air’s market share stood at 4.4 percent, while SpiceJet’s share fell to 2 percent. Crisis-hit SpiceJet saw its market share fall to 64 percent in September, while in January it had captured 5.6 percent of the total 1.31 crore domestic air passengers flown by Indian airlines.

48,222 passengers affected by flight cancellations

Meanwhile, IndiGo’s on-time performance stood at 69.2 percent, followed by Vistara (69.1 percent) and Air India (68.1 percent). SpiceJet and Alliance Air’s OTP in September was 30.4 percent and 53.8 percent, respectively. The on-time performance of scheduled domestic airlines is calculated for four metro airports – Bengaluru, Delhi, Hyderabad, and Mumbai. Besides, 48,222 passengers were affected by flight cancellations in September and airlines spent Rs 88.14 lakh on compensation and facilities for them.

According to DGCA, last month, 2,16,484 passengers were affected due to flight delays and airlines spent Rs 2.4 crore on facilitation. Airlines spent Rs 75.08 lakh on compensation and facilitation for 756 affected passengers who were denied boarding.
