A three-match T20 series was played between England and Australia. The last match of this series was canceled due to rain. Due to this the series ended in a 1-1 draw. Now both the teams are ready for the ODI series. England’s regular ODI and T20 captains are out of both the series against Australia. Meanwhile, Jos Buttler has made a big statement about improving his captaincy even more. England’s regular wicketkeeper-batsman and captain Jos Buttler is ready to give up his role behind the stumps, as he is getting older and if it also helps his captaincy. Butler has been out of the field since the T20 World Cup due to a right leg injury.
While talking to his senior players Eoin Morgan and Nick Knight during the Manchester T20 match against Australia, Butler said many big things. Butler has been retained as the captain of the limited overs team, although England failed to defend both the ODI and T20 World Cups in 12 months. He said that if giving up wicketkeeping helps him in his captaincy, then he would give up wicketkeeping. Morgan gave the example of Brendon McCullum, who used to give up wicketkeeping and field at mid-off in the last phase of his career.
What did Butler say
Butler said on Sky Sports during the third T20 match played between England and Australia on Sunday 15 September, “If I was playing in this T20 series, I would like to leave wicketkeeping and play at mid-off and see how it feels. McCullum was also not able to do wicketkeeping due to injury, but then he preferred to play next to the bowler at mid-off, so we can talk about it. If this is something that will help me in my captaincy, then I am ready for it.”
Young players will get a chance.
Butler said that I am fully prepared for such things. I just want the best for the team and the best for the team would be that I become the best captain. If I have to move from behind the wicket to do this, then I will do so. England has appointed Harry Brook as the captain for ODIs, while Phil Salt or Jamie Smith can do wicketkeeping. Butler said that the team will decide on this in the coming days as they want to ensure their role for young players, especially players like Smith, who have done wonders in Test matches.
