Vijay Verma’s ‘IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack’ has finally arrived on Netflix. This six-episode web series tells the story of the longest plane hijack in Indian history. Directed by Anubhav Sinha, the series is based on the 1999 Kandahar plane hijack incident in Indian history. Which was hijacked by terrorists in December 1999. The web show is adapted from the book Flight Into Fear: A Captain’s Story. The web show has received mostly good reviews. However, social media users are also criticizing the film, citing its ‘pro-terrorism’ and ‘anti-government’ story. So, let’s find out what issues are trending on X (formerly Twitter), which started a controversy after the release of the Netflix series.
Another user wrote, ‘Summary- ISI was not involved in this, Taliban are good guys’. People on social media criticized the makers of the series for tampering with the true incident.
A third user also questioned the director about naming the hijackers ‘Shankar’ and ‘Bhola’ and wrote, ‘Why did you name the terrorists Shankar and Bhola? @AnubhavSingh.’
A user named Gappistan Radio wrote, ‘Oh now terrorists are playing antakshari with passengers, one of whom they killed, another one was beheaded.’
Another user named Kunal Singh wrote, “#NetflixIndia has become a supporter of Pakistani terrorists selling fake stories. The 5 people who carried out #IC814TheKandaharHijack were Ibrahim Akhtar (from Bahawalpur), Shahid Akhtar Saeed, Sunny Ahmad Qazi, Zahoor Mistry (from Karachi) and Shakir (from Sukkur). Netflix calls them Shankar and Bhola.”
