Dhaka : There is a 103-year-old Sanskrit school in Sylhet district of Bangladesh, which is a center of attraction for followers of Sanatan Dharma. In this school, apart from Hindus, Muslim students also study Devvani and recite Vedic mantras.
Principal of the school, Dr. Dilip Kumar Das Chowdhary told Hindustan News that Shrihatt Sanskrit College was established in the year 1920 under the Assam region of the then Government of India during the British rule. The then landlord Ajay Krishna Rai had donated 18 bighas of land for the establishment of the college.
Dr. Chowdhary told that before the partition of India-Pakistan, Sylhet district of Bangladesh was a part of Assam province. He told that this school was closed after the formation of Pakistan, but after some time the school started operating again with the efforts of the local people. According to the Principal, when Bangladesh became an independent and sovereign nation in the year 1971, Shrihatt Sanskrit College got affiliation from the education department of the government. Earlier it was a Government of India recognized school.
400 Hindu and Muslim students study in Srihatt Sanskrit College
In response to a question, Principal Dr. Chowdhary told that at present 400 Hindu and Muslim students are studying in Shrihatt Sanskrit College. Many subjects like Sanskrit, Navya Vyakaran, Conspiracy, Ayurveda etc. are taught here. He told that the school has definitely got recognition from the Bangladesh government, but there is no financial assistance from the government for the salary of professors etc.
On being asked how the expenses of the school are managed, Dr. Chowdhary told that an amount of one crore rupees in Bangladesh currency in the name of Shrihatt Sanskrit Mahavidyalaya has been deposited in the bank for a long time. Some money is received in the form of interest and fees from the students, due to which the expenses of the school go on. He told that the teachers of the school donate education without salary. According to the Principal, in the Ayurveda department of the school, apart from ancient Ayurvedic texts like Sushruta Chikitsa, Charak Samhita and Bhrigu Samhita, subjects of modern physiology are also taught.
Sylhet has been the land of famous saints and scholars
Principal Dr. Chowdhary told that the students of Srihatt Sanskrit College are famous for their scholarship in many countries of the world including India. He told that the ancient name of Sylhet was “Srihat”. Many saints and scholars like Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and Subhash Pandit were born in Sylhet. He told that Rabindra Nath Thakur had given the noun of “Shri Bhoomi” to the land of Sylhet.
Shankaracharya also reached Srihatt Sanskrit Vidyalaya during his visit to Bangladesh
Govardhan Peethadhishwar Jagadguru Shankaracharya Swami Shri Adhokshajanand Dev Teerth is currently on a visit to Shakti Peethas in Bangladesh. Shankaracharya, who had come to see and worship the goddess at Sri Shail Mahalakshmi Shakti Peeth in Sylhet, also went to Srihatt Sanskrit Vidyalaya. After knowing the glorious history and present status of the school, Jagadguru said that he would write a letter to the Prime Minister of India for the development of Gurukuls in Bangladesh. During this, the Principal of the school, Dr. Dilip Kumar Das Chowdhary, besides the Head of the Department of Sanskrit, Prof. Rakesh Sharma, Prof. Vidyut Jyoti Chakraborty, Dr. Uttam Kumar Sarkar and Prof. Arun Chakraborty and other teachers and students of the school gave a grand welcome to Jagadguru Devtirtha.
