America, the country with the world’s oldest democratic system, will now be able to keep a public holiday on Diwali. Preparations are underway to enact a law in this regard in the New York State Assembly. What effect this decision will have on the school calendar is still being debated.

New York Assembly Speaker Carl Hastie issued a statement on Wednesday (May 24) confirming the proposal to introduce a ‘public holiday on Diwali’. In a statement, he said that this is being done to recognize the rich and diverse culture of New York. “The proposal to allow the New York Legislature to take a break on Lunar New Year and Diwali could be approved before the end of the legislative session,” he said.


Government holiday will be declared on 12

The session of the New York Legislative Assembly will continue till June 8. It is believed that by the end of the session, the proposal of ‘government holiday on Diwali’ can be approved. According to media reports, this proposal has been named Diwali Day Act, under which Diwali holiday will be declared as the 12th public holiday in New York.

Declaring Diwali as a public holiday in the US will benefit millions of people of Indian origin living there. They will be able to celebrate the festival of Diwali well with their family and friends.
