Onion exports from the country witnessed a sharp jump in 2022-23 and remained at a 6-year high with a year-on-year growth of 64 per cent. In the last financial year, the total export of onions was 25.25 lakh tonnes. This was driven by high demand from overseas as well as high supply locally. In value terms, onion exports grew by 22 per cent to $56.1 million.

According to data from the Horticulture Produce Exporters Association, onion shipments have seen a rise due to higher demand from neighboring countries and Gulf countries. This includes Bangladesh, Malaysia, the United Arab Emirates and Sri Lanka. According to him, exports have been good for the last few months due to high demand from abroad amid lack of competition. However, a country like the Philippines could not take full advantage of this situation as it did not open its market to Indian products. Philippines is buying Chinese products. The future of exports looks bright for the current year as well. However, the goods train has suffered a lot due to unseasonal rains. At present onion is available in abundance in the country but the yield of good quality is low. The reason for the low prices in the market is the mass availability of poor quality goods. It remains to be seen how many of these can be exported, says the organization’s president. Apart from this, a new crop from Baluchistan of Pakistan is also coming in the global market. Due to which Indian exporters may face some competition. Due to the weakening of their currency, they have got export advantage. Bangladesh will become the biggest buyer of Indian onions in 2022-23. He bought 6.7 lakh onions. Then UAE had bought 4.03 lakh onions.
