Lucknow The Department of Basic Education has contributed significantly to the state government’s efforts to reduce road accidents. Various campaigns run by primary schools to prevent road accidents have also seen an unprecedented reduction in accidents. The Department of Basic Education has been lauded by mentioning this achievement in the annual magazine published by the Transport Department. It has also been urged to continue further.

It is worth mentioning that programs like awareness campaign and rally along with competitions related to road safety by the students by the Basic Education Department on the appeal of the Transport Department have had a positive impact on the public.

A letter issued by Joint Director of Education Ganesh Kumar to all departmental Assistant Directors of Education (Basic) said that to reduce the number of road accidents and deaths, the transport department has published ‘Road Accidents in Uttar Pradesh 2022’. Copies of the annual magazine are made available.

According to this, in the year 2021 compared to the year 2019, the number of road accidents has decreased by 11.4 percent, the number of dead by 6.3 percent and the number of injured by 13.9 percent. This is the result of positive efforts of the department. Road safety week, awareness campaign and rally etc. programs along with road safety, quiz, essay writing, poster, slogan etc. competitions organized by the department in divisions and districts have been highly appreciated.

The letter also asked that road safety rules should be imparted to the children and parents in school management committee meetings during assemblies in schools. Training of teachers through Master Trainers etc. has also played a positive role in efforts to reduce the number of road accidents and deaths.

He has further said that following the letter from the Transport Department, continue to carry out all the activities smoothly in your districts by wide dissemination of road safety related rules.

Notably, the Transport Department had written to the Director (Primary and Secondary) in April appreciating the cooperation of the Education Department in providing an annual magazine titled ‘Road Accidents in Uttar Pradesh 2022’ published by the department. Under SDG Goal 3.6 of the Transport Department, a target of 50 percent reduction in road accident deaths by 2030 has been set. With this, all the departments have been appealed for mutual cooperation.

The golden rules given by the department for road safety include avoiding drunk driving, mandatory helmets in two-wheelers, obeying speed limits, obeying traffic rules and signals, and keeping your vehicle fit at all times.
