New Delhi : State Bank of India (SBI), the country’s largest public sector bank, has issued a guideline for changing Rs 2,000 notes. SBI told the bank that there is no need to show any identity card (ID) to exchange the note. No form will have to be filled for this. 10 notes can be changed at a time.
SBI has given this information in a notification issued on Sunday. The State Bank has issued this clarification after rumors circulating on social media that it was being claimed that in order to exchange Rs 2,000,000 notes, a form will have to be filled along with showing ID proof, Aadhaar card.
State Bank has written to the Chief General Managers of all its local head offices, saying that the general public will not need any form to exchange Rs 2,000 notes up to a total of Rs 20,000 at a time. According to the letter issued by the bank on May 20, there is no need to present any identity proof at the time of exchange. State Bank has asked the local head offices to arrange all possible assistance to the public.
It is noteworthy that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had announced the withdrawal of Rs 2,000 notes from circulation this week. RBI has given time from May 23 to September 30 to the public to deposit or exchange these notes in bank accounts. According to the Reserve Bank, the Rs 2,000 note will remain legal tender till September 30, while Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes were invalidated overnight in November 2016 demonetisation.
