The country-based quota for green card approval in the US has significantly increased the waiting period for Indians to obtain green cards, US immigration officials said. Country quotas have resulted in long green card waiting periods, especially for people from India, China, Mexico, and the Philippines. The green card holder is given the privilege of permanent residence in the US. 1,40,000 is the annual limit for employment-based green cards for the entire world. United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) official Douglas Rand said that the maximum limit of family-sponsored preference green cards per year has been set at 2,26,000 by the US Parliament.
Per country cap of 25,620 green cards per year at a rate of 7 percent
The family-sponsored and employment-based annual preference limit can be calculated as 7 percent each year, meaning a quota of 25,620 green cards can be set for each country in a year. Because of this, there is a growing backlog of green cards for people from other countries, including India, China, Mexico and the Philippines. The demand for family-sponsored and employment-based green cards exceeds 25,620 each year. Only the US Congress can increase this limit. That’s why every year every country tries to give maximum number of green cards. The backlog of green cards for Indians has exceeded 10 years.
