A bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justice PS Narasiha and JB Pardiwala heard the matter. The Supreme Court yesterday allowed hearing of a petition by a Muslim party challenging the Allahabad High Court’s decision on carbon dating. The High Court had ordered a ‘scientific survey’ of the alleged ‘Shivling’ in the Gnanavapi Masjid complex in Varanasi. According to the High Court, how old the Shivlinga is can be known.
Hearing adjourned till August 7
The Supreme Court hearing the petition today said that the implementation of the relevant instructions in the order of the Allahabad High Court will be stayed till the next hearing. With this, the Supreme Court has adjourned the hearing of the Gnanawapi case till August 7. Until then, the ban on carbon dating will continue. At the start of the hearing, a bench comprising Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justice PS Narasimha and Justice JB Pardiwala took note of the submissions made by senior advocate Huzaifa Ahmadi, appearing for the Gnanawapi Masjid Management Committee, and agreed to list the petition for hearing today.
