Bengaluru: Karnataka Pradesh Congress President D.K. Shivakumar said today (Thursday), ‘I have accepted the post of Deputy Chief Minister in the wider interest of Congress. As the parliamentary elections are around the corner, I have to bow down to the party president and the Gandhi family and accept the formula suggested by them. What doesn’t work? Sometimes you have to break the ice. (Firmness has to be lost.) Ultimately we have a responsibility towards the people of Karnataka. Commitment to them. We have to show results.
It is known that Siddaramaiah has been nominated as the Chief Minister of Karnataka, breaking the deadlock created after the Congress won 135 seats in Karnataka. Journalists came to know about this only after midnight.
Sivakumar’s brother D.K. Suresh said, “I am not happy (with this decision), but in the interest of Karnataka, we had to keep our promise, so Sivakumar accepted it. We will see in the future that there is still a long way to go. I wish that (Shivakumar gets the chief ministership) doesn’t happen but we have to wait and see what happens.
61-year-old D.K. Shivakumar is a vocal leader, acting as a solution to the problems faced by the Congress in the state. Therefore, the high command is also very careful to maintain a balance between the two leaders (Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar).
It is also learned that besides being offered the post of Deputy Chief Minister, Sivakumar has also been offered six important portfolios. However, Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala has asked party workers and especially leaders not to make any statement till official confirmation.
